Writer Wednesday…Marcia J. Kenyon

As a poet, I tend to write in free verse. I rhyme very rarely. My thoughts don’t come to me as music, and so I am consistently impressed by my fellow poets who can do just that – and beautifully.

Marcia J. Kenyon is one. I read “The Butterfly Collection” several months ago, and have found myself re-reading a poem here and there to give myself a boost. I am, largely, a positive person. Still, I have my days (as we all do) and this poetry collection is such a lift to the spirit.

This is not to say that the poet doesn’t take on heavier, or controversial subjects. In the Chapter “Childhood” she addresses abuse, but also birthdays, and home. She takes a broad view of her subject matter, so that she is not sugar-coating anything. In her poetry on “Nature,” Marcia also takes a clear-eyed view of climate change, pollution, and, lightly, “Dustclouds.”

With that being said, many of the poems in this collection are very uplifting and comprehensible for young adult readers. I shared many of the poems in this book with my children, and we enjoyed hearing them together.

I highly recommend taking the time to read the poetry of Marcia J. Kenyon. She will brighten your day, and her words will give you that deep breath you sometimes need before taking a step in the right direction.

Happy reading, and blessings to you all!
