Tuesday Thoughts on Logic

The days have officially blurred together. I know it’s Wednesday, but I missed Tuesday altogether. I think I slept last night. So far, no one is spiking a fever today. I think we are out of the woods!

I thought I’d write about logic today. Logic, when taken to the extreme, becomes illogical. The hyper-rational tends to become irrational because it does us no good to prize the intellect at the expense of the heart and the spirit. Although Western philosophies often view each individual as a combination of separate parts (mind, body, heart, spirit), I tend to lean towards the more integrated view espoused by Eastern philosophy.

A healthy person is healthy in mind, as well as body, as well as the heart. We cannot separate ourselves into different compartments and expect to thrive.

Short of being the Vulcan, Spock, in Star Trek and operating only by logic, most of us are a hodge podge. We are messy and flawed and imperfect, and I think this makes us all lovable.

“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.” ~ Albert Einstein

“Never build your emotional life on the weaknesses of others.” ~ George Santayana

“Pure logic is the ruin of the spirit.” ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.” ~ Leonard Nimoy (HAHA! EVEN SPOCK AGREES!!!!)

“Logic is in the eye of the logician.” ~ Gloria Steinem

The French phrase tells us Vive la difference! Celebrate our differences. I would take it a step further: celebrate, yes, but also love our differences. Love does not mean we have to be in agreement or accord, but accept the gift of what our friends tell us from that place of love. Truth can be painful when it is revealed, but love is the balm that soothes our hearts and minds from the sting of what can feel like a rebuke.

Love. It trumps logic. Every time.

Blessings to you all…
