How do you make a physical comeback from Breast Cancer?

It starts in your head, first of all. Then, if it fits your style, it turns into a plan on paper. Finally, you get moving.

Self-care is important for everyone. Managing self-care while negotiating disease and treatment (and don’t forget the crazy schedule that comes with those) can be a daunting task. There are some very fundamental points that should never be forgotten:

– LISTEN to your body: This is difficult for many people on an every day basis, but it is crucial for someone attempting any type of fitness program during/after major illness.

– HYDRATE: Take the recommended 6-8 glasses (8 ounce glasses) of water and bump that up. Aim for 10 glasses of water per day, especially when you are incorporating further activity.

– FIND A FRIEND: Do NOT try this alone. During and after illness, your body can respond very differently to even the mildest forms of exertion. It helps to have a partner in crime, not only to cheer you on, but to suggest taking a break as needed.

– ACTIVITY: BE GENTLE! Seriously, do not overdo it. When you come up with a plan that sounds moderate, tone it down even further, at least for a little while. Yoga and walking are excellent choices. If you don’t have post-operative recovery happening, getting into a pool is also fantastic, as you can do very mild resistance work in the water with no impact on your joints.

– BE KIND TO YOURSELF. Patience helps here, too. Give yourself longer recovery breaks between activity, and don’t berate yourself if you aren’t quite capable of what you thought. You’ll get there faster than you realized.
